Egypt’s Presidency confirmed the Cairo reception on September 1, 2026, part of a wider trip that also took Xi to the SCO summit in Bishkek and a state visit to Kyrgyzstan, at President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s invitation. The only on-the-ground effect reported was temporary traffic diversions — Salah Salem Road, Nasr Road, the 6th of October Bridge, Ramses Street, the Ring Road, and routes near the Giza Plateau. No tourist sites closed, no tours were cancelled.

Why 2026 specifically

Timing explains most of the attention. 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of Egypt-China diplomatic relations, established May 30, 1956 — Egypt was the first Arab country and the first African country to formally recognize the People’s Republic of China. Xi’s only previous Egypt trip, in 2016, coincided with the 60th anniversary and included a joint stop with El-Sisi at Karnak Temple.
