Sharm sits on the Red Sea at the tip of Sinai, and the reef starts a few metres from the shore. Ras Mohamed and Tiran Island are the two best-known snorkelling spots and both are day trips by boat.
Inland is entirely different. Mount Sinai is climbed overnight to reach the summit for sunrise, with St Catherine’s Monastery at the foot of it.

It is a long walk rather than a technical climb, done overnight to reach the top for sunrise. Warm layers matter; it is cold at the summit.
