Egypt Tours Packages from USA

Flying to Egypt from the United States is a long day. From the East Coast it is roughly eleven hours non-stop to Cairo, and closer to sixteen with a stop in Europe or the Gulf. The packages on this page are built around that: an easy first day, someone holding your name inside the arrivals hall, and domestic flights between cities so the hours you paid for are spent at the sites and not on a coach.

Every trip below is private. Your own Egyptologist guide, your own vehicle, your own start times. Nothing here is a group departure, and each itinerary can be lengthened, shortened or reordered before you book.

What each trip actually covers, day by day

8 days / 7 nights · from the USA

8 Days in Egypt from the USA with a Luxury Nile Cruise

Cairo first, then the river. Two nights in the capital for Giza and the Egyptian Museum, a domestic flight south, and four nights aboard a five-star cruise that moves between Aswan and Luxor while you sleep. It is the shortest way to see both halves of ancient Egypt without hurrying either one.

Duration 8 days / 7 nights
Cities Cairo, Giza, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor
Tour type Private, tailor-made
Domestic flights Cairo–Aswan and Luxor–Cairo, arranged for you
Guide Private English-speaking Egyptologist
Best months October to April
Pace Moderate — walking and stairs at the temples, with the cruise days as rest

Day by day

  1. Arrive in Cairo. You are met inside the terminal, walked through immigration and driven to your hotel. Nothing is scheduled — the flight from the States is long enough on its own.
  2. Giza in the morning, while the light is still low: the three pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. The Egyptian Museum in the afternoon.
  3. Fly to Aswan. Philae Temple on its island, the High Dam, then aboard the cruise before dinner.
  4. Sailing north. Kom Ombo, the only temple in Egypt built for two gods at once, then Edfu, reached the old way by horse-drawn carriage.
  5. The West Bank at Luxor: the painted tombs in the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s terraced temple against the cliff, and the Colossi of Memnon.
  6. The East Bank: Karnak, then Luxor Temple. Fly back to Cairo in the evening.
  7. A free day in Cairo. Khan el-Khalili, Coptic Cairo or the Citadel if you want them — and nothing at all if you do not.
  8. Transfer to Cairo International for your flight home.

Abu Simbel can be added on the Aswan day as an early morning flight. Ask when you enquire.

8 days / 7 nights · from the USA

8 Days in Egypt from the USA with the Grand Egyptian Museum and a Nile Cruise

The same length as the trip above, turned the other way round. You sail from Luxor down to Aswan rather than up, and the Cairo half is built around the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the whole of Tutankhamun’s burial is shown together for the first time since it was found.

Best months October to April
Pace Moderate — two early starts, otherwise unhurried

Day by day

  1. Arrive in Cairo, met at the aircraft door and taken to your hotel.
  2. The Giza plateau in the morning — Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx below them — and the Grand Egyptian Museum after lunch.
  3. Fly to Luxor. Karnak while the afternoon heat drops, Luxor Temple as it lights up, then aboard the cruise.
  4. The West Bank: the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. The boat sails for Edfu in the afternoon.
  5. Edfu, the most complete temple standing in Egypt, and Kom Ombo in the late light.
  6. Aswan. Philae Temple, the High Dam, and an afternoon on the water in a felucca if you want one.
  7. Fly back to Cairo. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, the Citadel, or a free afternoon — your choice on the day.
  8. Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Abu Simbel fits on the Aswan morning as a separate flight. It is not included in the price shown.

9 days / 8 nights · from the USA

9 Days in Egypt from the USA: the Nile, Abu Simbel and Nubia

Nine days buys you the two things an eight-day trip has to leave out: Abu Simbel, four hours south of Aswan, and a proper afternoon in a Nubian village, which is the only part of this itinerary where you meet the living country rather than the ancient one.

Best months October to April
Pace Moderate — one very early start for Abu Simbel

Day by day

  1. Arrive in Cairo and settle in. No sightseeing on day one.
  2. Giza: the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, then the Egyptian Museum.
  3. Fly to Luxor. Karnak and Luxor Temple, then aboard the cruise.
  4. The West Bank: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon.
  5. Edfu by horse-drawn carriage, then Kom Ombo, shared between Sobek the crocodile and Horus the falcon.
  6. Aswan: Philae Temple, and the Nubian Museum, which is the best single explanation of what the High Dam cost the people who lived here.
  7. Abu Simbel, early. Ramses II cut four seated versions of himself into the cliff, and the whole thing was sawn apart and lifted eighty feet in the 1960s to save it from the rising lake.
  8. Back to Cairo. A Nubian village afternoon in Aswan first, if the flight times allow — your guide will tell you honestly whether they do.
  9. Transfer to Cairo International for your flight home.

5 Days in Egypt from the USA: Cairo and the Pyramids

The short trip, for a first visit or an add-on to somewhere else. Everything stays within reach of Cairo, so there are no internal flights, no packing and repacking, and no 4am starts. Three full days is enough for Giza, Saqqara, both museums and Islamic Cairo without a single rushed morning.

Pace Easy to moderate — long days on your feet, but no early flights

Day by day

  1. Arrive in Cairo, met at the airport and driven to your hotel.
  2. Giza and Saqqara: the three great pyramids and the Sphinx, then Djoser’s Step Pyramid, which is older than all of them and the first large stone building anyone anywhere had ever put up.
  3. The Grand Egyptian Museum in the morning and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir in the afternoon — the new one and the old one, which hold different things and are worth seeing in that order.
  4. Islamic and Coptic Cairo: the Citadel, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and Khan el-Khalili at the end of the day, when it fills up.
  5. Transfer to Cairo International for your flight home.

A day trip to Alexandria, or a flight down to Luxor and back, can be added to the middle of this itinerary.

11 days / 10 nights · from the USA

11 Days in Egypt from the USA: Nile Cruise and the Red Sea

For a flight this long, eleven days is the version that stops feeling like a march. Cairo and the Nile take the first six days; the last four are Hurghada, where the Red Sea reef starts a few yards offshore and the only thing on the schedule is what you decide that morning.

  6. Karnak and Luxor Temple in the morning, then the drive across to Hurghada on the coast.
  7. Hurghada. Snorkelling, a dive, a desert afternoon, or none of it.
  8. A second free day on the Red Sea.
  9. Fly back to Cairo and check in.
  10. The Egyptian Museum, the Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali.
  11. Khan el-Khalili if there is time, then the airport.

Sharm El Sheikh or Marsa Alam can replace Hurghada if you would rather dive somewhere quieter.

Questions we get from American travellers

How long is the flight from the United States?

There are non-stop flights from New York to Cairo at around eleven hours. From most other US cities you will change once, usually in Europe or the Gulf, which puts the total journey between fourteen and eighteen hours. We schedule nothing on your arrival day for that reason.

Do Americans need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. Most US passport holders can buy one on arrival at the airport, or apply for an e-visa online beforehand, which is the calmer option after a long flight. Your passport needs at least six months left on it. Check the current rules before you travel, as they do change.

Is the flight from the USA included in the price?

No. International airfare is never included in the prices on this site, and neither is your Egyptian entry visa, optional excursions, personal spending or tips. Domestic flights inside Egypt are included where the itinerary needs them, and they are listed on each trip.

When is the best time to go?

October to April. Days are warm rather than hot and the sites are bearable in the middle of the day. May to September is possible, and cheaper, but Luxor and Aswan regularly pass 40°C and the sightseeing has to be done early.

How far ahead should I book?

Three to six months for a trip between October and April, and earlier again for Christmas and New Year, when the cruises fill first. Shorter notice is often still possible — ask and we will tell you honestly what is left.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Yes. Every trip here is built for one group at a time, so days can be added, dropped or reordered, and hotels moved up or down, before you commit to anything.
